How to attract the right audience to your brand on Instagram

Are you wondering how to attract the right audience to your brand on Instagram?

If you barely manage to scrape enough new ideas to post to your Instagram account each week, then you already know the feeling: ‘What the heck am I going to post next?!’

You try to be creative to attract the right audience to your brand and you think of all sort of things to post, you even try different hashtags (you should win an award for the amounts you’ve tried). You post photo after photo and then… crickets. No likes, no comments, no click through to your site and worst of all.. No sales (not even close)!

One day your follower numbers are up, and the next day they drop and you have less followers than the day before - even tho you literally just gained new followers? (WTF?)

And then, finally, somebody likes your post, but it’s just one of those ‘gain free followers’ scams.
You are starting to wonder what all this effort is for.

BUT wait, don’t fall out of love with your IG account yet, because Instagram is freaking f**king AWESOME!!

(as of Jan 2017, the mainly-mobile sharing network has reached 300 million daily active users, making Instagram one of the most popular social networks worldwide.)

And with higher engagement rates than any other social platform, Instagram is THE channel to build a brand.

How to find the right audience

The bad news: It’s clear that your brand is attracting the wrong audience. But the good news is there is an easy fix, and in this post I’m going to show you how.

Behind any kickass brand - and not just on Instagram - is the right audience.

However, no brand is born with the right audience in place (Yep, not even those gals with tens of thousands of organic followers). You have to find your tribe.

But before you can look for your tribe out there, you have to define exactly who your tribe is.

Your brand can’t be all things to all people. The more your concentrate on ONE person (instead of thinking of them as a group) the better.

So, who is your ideal audience you are trying to attract?

  • Who is your product or service for?
  • Who do you want to work with, and why?
  • What insights do you have into your audience?
  • What does your audience need help with?
  • What solution do you have for your audience?
  • Why should they pick your brand?
  • What makes your brand special, and why would your audience care?

The more you understand who your right audience is, the more you can attract them to your brand.

I have worked for and with brands all my life (I’m a little obsessed by brands and you can read more why here), and I believe that what truly connects brands with people are insights and trust.

So here lies the challenge for your brand - how do you get people to trust (and buy) from you?

Remember what your mum always told you, ‘Don't accept candy from strangers’. Well, the same is true for online businesses. People don't just sign up, follow your IG account or buy from brands they don't know. People only buy from brands they trust.

How do you get the right audience to trust your brand?

With the right insights.

You need to make your brand relevant to your audience by sharing:

  • the same experiences as they have

  • the same pain points they have

  • the same values they have

Your past struggles are their current struggles

Show that you are on the same page as your audience; that you have been thru exactly the same struggle as they are going thru right now, AND you have found a solution, which could help them too.

Once you know who your right audience is, creating crazy-clickable-content becomes a walk in the park. Knowing who your brand is serving will give you focus, meaning that you channel your time and energy into the right places, creating content that sparks conversation (because social is all about conversation, right?) and giving you more insights into what your audience needs help with - i.e. create products people actually want (and are willing to buy).

Knowing your audience really is a win-win and a must-do exercise for any serious #girlboss!

Hit the value sweet spot

The more insights you have, the better you’ll be able to attract your audience. I get insights into my audience by doing social listening (my fave tactic), and then use the same insights to hit the sweet spot with my audience. In fact, that’s why I call it The Value Sweet Spot Formula™. Want to find out how it works? Read more here.
